This is the fifth anniversary of our annual Symposium on our Youngest Citizens, held at UW Tacoma. The Children’s Museum of Tacoma convenes the Symposium to engage community members, parents, educators, and policymakers in dialogue as we explore concepts, ideas, and potential actions in the context of what we want for our youngest citizens.

Our keynote speaker is Alfie Kohn, author and speaker on human behavior, education, and parenting. Kohn has been described by Time Magazine as “perhaps the country’s most outspoken critic of education’s fixation on grades and test scores.” He has appeared twice on “Oprah,” as well as on “The Today Show,” NPR’s “Talk of the Nation,” and many other TV and radio programs. He spends much of his time speaking at education conferences, as well as to parent groups, school faculties, and researchers.

Additionally we are excited to have Lighting Talks by Michael Mirra from Tacoma Housing Authority and Tanya Durand, Executive Director of the Children's Museum of Tacoma. We are excited to hear from children directly during our first Children's Panel, as well as videos highlighting different activities throughout our community.
